Just a short drive from the affluent neighborhood of Mont Kiara is a hidden gem for budding tennis players; Kuala Lumpur’s National Tennis Centre. This centre has been open for years; however, it has remained under the radar.
The complex boasts a total of 16 high-quality courts, three of which are indoor courts, housed in a stadium area. The outdoor courts are split into recreational, coaching and wheelchair use, and the whole centre is accessible for wheelchair users. The centre also provides players with a rest area, shower rooms, toilet facilities and a cafeteria offering a range of drinks and a tasty spread of Malaysian foods.
Amateurs can walk in the steps of tennis professionals here; the centre is the training ground of Malaysia’s national players. The father of two of the Malaysian team’s players spoke highly of the complex, highlighting the mix of people and nationalities that use the facility. “There are coaches from Australia and Holland as well as Malaysians” he commented.
The centre has also created Tennis Town Academy where beginners and advanced players alike can go to learn new skills and improve their technique with the help of a qualified instructor. The academy caters for both kids and adults, with more “serious” younger players tending to play in ‘after-school’ hours. Coach Mr Hazil told us that “the centre is full of mummies in the mornings that come with their kids.” Both local and foreign kids visit the centre, therefore it’s a great opportunity for everyone in the community to make new friends.
Peak times are generally from 3-7pm for kids and from 7-10pm for adults. Surprisingly, the summer holiday period proves less busy than throughout the year.
